Osteopathy for Mid Life & Later

Changes

Around middle age, many people start feeling aches & restrictions with some movements. This may be due to:

  • Past injuries or over use(e.g. a repetitive sports movement) , catching up with us.
  • The cumulative stress of postural problems, whether at rest or at work.
  • becoming less active.
  • stress.

How can osteopathy help?
Osteopathic assessment looks at how the whole body is working together. Treatment restores mobility in the joints Also included is advice about what you can do to re-condition & strengthen the affected part.

The body compensates, but...
Our bodies are excellent at compensating for physical problems, but often this effort can’t be indefinitely maintained without some cost.

The muscles responsible for doing the compensating eventually fatigue, tighten & weaken. They start to hurt. Joints influenced by those muscles may also become restricted.

Other joints may have more stress placed on them as part of the coping process - and this too can lead them being over used.

This can set the scene for early degeneration or wear and tear in those areas.

Influence how your body will behave as you age
Staying active is one key to maintaining flexibility & strength. Another is treatment to deal with joint & muscular problems before they become a permanent feature of your life that you just learn to live with.

Limiting Future Health
If left unchecked, this devaloping pain & stiffness diminishes patterns of movement and flexibility into later life.
Habitually avoiding certain activities and movements, or holding yourself in abnormal ways may make things easier, but in the long run your body's flexibility may suffer as you stop moving towards the end range of certain motions. Stiffness is the result.
Example, an achy lower back may make the owner bend the knees instead of the back. But the longer term result is a back which becomes even more weakened and restricted in what it can do.
